KidsEmbrace

Kids safety is very important to parents. Especially when it comes to transporting children in a vehicle. Most states require a child to be in a car seat. Here in Illinois children are required to be in child restraint system until 8 years old or they fit into a car’s seat belt safely. It’s our job as parents to choose child restraint equipment that is safe to use and properly installed. Sometimes though toddlers can be tough when it comes to getting them into their car seats. My little sister was. Most of our children have done ok. They seem to just get sick of sitting period on long trips! Pretty normal for a child.

For those tougher toddlers, I imagine KidsEmbrace toddler car seats would appeal to these ever-growing, ever-changing children and make them want to sit in their car seat…at least for a time.

Boys familiar with Batman would love the Batman car seat. Girls would love the Dora Explorer seat. KidsEmbrace offers affordable, yet fun car seats for kids.

Have you heard of KidsEmbrace? I hadn’t until now.

Jersey Strong!

This picture seems to sum up the destruction of Hurricane Sandy. I’ve seen this picture over and over again. I’ve also seen this roller coaster on it’s pier on a beautiful sunny summer day.  I live about 1 1/2 hours from Seaside, NJ and 3 hours from Cape May, NJ where the eye of Hurricane Sandy came in. The Jersey Shore is my stomping grounds when the weather get warm. I’ve seen hurricanes and other types of weather devastate other parts of the country and have felt bad for the people that live in the area.  My entire outlook changed when I started recognizing the structures falling into the ocean. It’s just heart breaking.

Hurricane Sandy hit the Jersey Coast at only a category 2 and the destruction is hard to take in. Most of you have heard only about the coast, which took the brunt of the storm.

I live inland in Northwest New Jersey, like I said before about 1 1/2 hours from Seaside. There are 59,000 homes in my county and 52,000 were without electricity after Hurricane Sandy passed. In my town there are 2,801 homes and 2,292 were left in the dark, that’s 82%! I’d like to share some of my pictures from the storm.

Monday October 29th – She’s on her way

Wednesday October 31 – Since there were only very few gas stations opened because of lack of electricity and lack of gas.  We sat in this line for 1 1/2 hours waiting for gas for our car and a generator. The gas station is at the top of the hill.

The picture below is the end of the line where is starts to corner.

Having fun in the car with a box of crackers.

The reason we were without electric

Our nosy neighbors.  ha…..ha…. ha….

Our flushing system included going daily to the local stream to bucket water into the bin.

The contents of the fridge and freezer. All the corn and veggies we froze for the winter all went bad. Such a bummer.

Then, it started to snow.

Here’s a tree that fell at my in-law’s house.

That’s me standing next to the roots, I’m 5′ 3″.

Here’s a few various pictures from around my area. The photo below has been a common site in our area lately.

The sign reads “Please do not wait – No Gas – We have Diesel”.

This one is a local hotel and the trucks and guys taking a break.

A pallet of Cup of Noodles.

We lost our power on Monday, October 29th at 8:00 pm. We were one of the lucky ones to get our power back 8 days later on Election Day November 6th. And on November 11th – there were still 2,164 homes in my county without electric that’s almost 2 weeks!  As I write this, I am very thankful for my family, friends, and health.  Many people lost everything. When I was able to get online. I found a few more pictures of the shore, I had forgotten about the sand.

This is sand coming in this front door.

This is the main road in Long Beach Island, NJ. I drove on this road 3 months ago!

JERSEY STRONG! We will be back!

National Do Not Call Registry

Lately, I’ve been getting lots of unwanted calls on my house and cell phone. So, I headed over to the National DO NOT CALL Registry and signed up my phone numbers. You will need to enter a valid email address, they will send you an email for EACH phone number you register and you MUST click each link to activate the registry for each number. So, my fingers are cross this works. It’s so annoying to receive unwanted calls!

Editor’s note: It’s also worth having an unlisted/private number as well. It is a nominal fee each month for the additional privacy and the phone company does not include you in any phone listings on or off line. Since moving to our new home a year ago we have enjoyed a relatively quiet phone line since having an “private” number.

We also exercise caution when giving out our number, especially our cell phones. It’s not easy because you still have companies who will sell, rent or give out your number.

Primrose School of Algonquin Mommy Mixer

We were privileged to be invited to a “Mommy Mixer” at the Primrose School of Algonquin. The Primrose School opened their doors to area moms and gave us a day of engaging activities for the children and tours and information for the mommies!

Overall it was an enjoyable day. We began as a group and shared a music class, comparable to those the children experience every day at Primrose. My children we engaged and active during the class, it was a delight. The children then were broken up by age group and went to have fun with the teachers while the mommies were able to tour the building and learn more about the philosophy.

My children separated well, and there fore loved the activities that were planned for them…they did two crafts and played on their awesome playground facility.  While the children played I was able to view all of the play/educational rooms at Primrose. They were very clean and organized. They felt welcoming and ready for children!

My sister accompanied me to the event. She has 3 little children who do not normally separate well … but at this event they did pretty well. Her 1 year old twins were engaged and receptive to being separated from mom. Her 3 year old separated well because he was with my children and they feel comfortable together. (Primrose had children separated the children in two rooms one for 2 and under and one for 3 and over).

While touring we were enlightened about the Primrose philosophy by the owner Laura. Primrose believes that with the right foundation anything is possible. At Primrose they provide the right foundation to Build Active Minds, healthy bodies, and Happy Hearts. They are able to do this by creating the right balance… laughing and learning…playing and exploring…talking and listening. This is a great philosophy because it mirrors my own philosophy with my children.

Primrose has educational full day programs for children 6 weeks to Kindergarten. (They have a private kindergarten). For those looking for only educational programs rather than a care option included they have half-day programs for toddlers through kindergarten that run up to 5 hours per day. They also have programs for 5-12 year olds who need before and after care…they call this their explorer club.

Overall… if you are considering a care option or a preschool/kindergarten option for your child Primrose is an excellent choice. They provide excellent care in a state of the art facility close to home.

My First Farmers Almanac

I bought my first Farmers Almanac the other day and I can’t believe I didn’t buy it sooner!

I always thought the Farmers Almanac was all about the weather.  Boy was I surprised when I found tons of fantastic information!

Yes, it does have weather information,  BUT, on page 8 I found out how to get rid of weeds with out pulling or chemicals and it’s easy!  You pour boiling water on them or use a mixture of dish washing liquid (5 tablespoons) and water (4 cups) in a spray bottle!  I also learned how to make a “Homemade Jar Opener”, “No-Mess Baking”, ways to cut energy costs, how to save on gas, even a section on comfort foods (my favorite).

I plan on buying one every year!  They are really a wealth of information!

Back to School With Boys and Girls Club of America (BGCA)

Back to school season is here! I know we are in full swing around our house! The children have gathered and packed their school supplies in anticipation of the first day of school…and today we finally got our teacher assignment!

What are some of the things you do to prepare your children to head back to school?

I know we are a fortunate family in being able to clothe and supply our children for the upcoming school year. But we also remember that there are those less fortunate than ourselves and as a family have always participated in programs that assist unfortunate families during the back to school season.

There are many local, national, and global organizations that you can pick from to help the less fortunate…but Boys and Girls Club of America (BGCA) is a great organization that assists children in need.

This year Boys and Girls Club of America (BGCA) and Disney have partnered to launch the Tools for Back to School initiative. This initiative features a pop-quiz style game, where supplies are donated to BGCA for every correct answer you score.

This is a fun way to give back to the community without leaving your home…plus the kids can play too! Here is the link: http://www.bgca.org/backtoschool/Pages/Landing.aspx

I just played the trivia game and got all the answers correct! Can you beat my score? Reminder that each 5 correct answers = school supplies for a club kid!

The BGCA has also partnered with JCPenney – and in August you can join JCP cares and round up your purchase at the register to benefit BGCA.  So…take a trip over to your local JCP, get the kids some back to school clothes and a free hair cut (JCP is giving away free haircuts in the month of August). Visit JCP website for more information: http://www.jcpenney.com/dotcom/jsp/browse/marketing/promotion.jsp?pageId=pg40013300014

Well I hope you are getting yourself and your children ready for the start of a new school season! Whether your children are home schooled or attend a traditional school remember that the BGCA website offers different educational content and tip sheets for parents to download and utilize. You can find them on the left hand side of the BGCA site under the ‘Get Ready’ header.  You can find these handy tools here:

http://www.bgca.org/backtoschool/Pages/Landing.aspx

BGCA has really outdone themselves with tips for parents and children. I especially like the time management tip sheet that they have available. Do not forget to check the Get Ready section and see if any of the materials can work for you!

Fridge Hunt #ChooseCartons

How often to you really look in your refrigerator? Have you ever gone on a fridge hunt? A fridge hunt, you say? A fridge hunt is when you take really good stock of what is in your refrigerator, what food packaging is used and whether or not it is truly eco-friendly. I did this earlier in the week because I wanted to make note of all the packaging the different foods came in. I was astonished to discover that about 99% of all the packaging in my fridge was plastic – plastic bags, plastic cartons and plastic containers. All of which are pretty much recyclable, though we usually do not recycle our salad bags. There were very few glass jars or containers and there was only a couple egg cartons that were made out of paper, which of course are both recyclable and compostable. We do both with paper egg cartons. Since we are waiting for our hens to lay eggs we are saving our egg cartons, not only to recycle them but also to save money from buying new cartons.

I even took photos of my fridge for you – excuse the dirt it hasn’t been cleaned in a couple of weeks!

Even though we have been on a journey of living a greener lifestyle and eating healthier, I’ll admit that here are still many things I don’t know. Each time I learn something new, it blows me away. I don’t even know which packaging adds freshness to our food. That’s why when I read some facts recently I knew I had to share them because you are going to be taken aback as much as I was in regards to the importance of using paper packaging.

Some interesting facts about paper cartons:

– “Over 41 million households have access to carton recycling, and that number is on the rise. In addition, cartons are made from renewable materials – more than 70 percent of the carton is made from paper, all from trees from responsibly managed forests.
– Packaging plays a very important role in keeping food and beverages fresh. The environmental impact of a package is just as important as the contents inside.
– Cartons are recyclable where facilities exist. The paper fiber contained in cartons is valuable. Recycled cartons are used to make products such as tissue, office paper, wall boards and other building materials. To learn if your community accepts cartons for recycling, please visit www.recyclecartons.com or check with your local recycling program.
– Cartons are made with renewable energy. More than 50 percent of the energy used to make the paper in Evergreen Packaging’s cartons comes from biomass.
– Responsible forestry promotes new forest growth, and these forests help to diminish greenhouse gases. Forests remove carbon from the atmosphere and store it in trees. In the US, due to both increases in the total area of forest land and increases in the carbon stored per acre, an additional 192 million metric tons of carbon are sequestered each year through responsible forest management programs nationwide. This offsets roughly 11% of the country’s industrial greenhouse gas emissions, the equivalent of removing almost 135 million passenger vehicles from the nation’s highways.”

Don’t these facts just make you want to buy more food in paper packaging? I know it does I do! Do you know that if you share any of the above facts via twitter with the hashtag #choosecartons you will help raise money for Habitat for Humanity®? Tweet to your heart’s content!
