Healthy Easter Treats for Kids

by Kelly Wilson

Easter baskets are a favorite tradition among kids of all ages. Although fun and festive for this time of year, our children can easily be overwhelmed with the amount of sugary treats inside those baskets.

Healthy Easter treats provide wholesome alternatives to traditional chocolate bunnies, and will help keep your holiday fun and delicious while keeping your kids healthy.

Go Organic

Organic treats provide healthy and delicious Easter products to use to fill a child’s basket. Many of these products use raw sugar, an alternative to high-fructose corn syrup, as well as avoiding harmful chemicals found in processed food.

There are many kinds of organic products, but I have a few personal favorites that I use as healthy Easter treats for my kids. Annie’s Homegrown items, like crackers and fruit snacks, are already bunny-shaped and perfect for Easter baskets. Peter Rabbit Organics also fits nicely into an Easter theme. Yummy Earth and Heavenly Organics provide all-natural, candy-specific alternatives as well.

Small Servings

If you choose to buy candy for your children’s Easter Baskets, smaller is better. Provide one miniature chocolate bunny instead of a large one, or a single-serve package of jelly beans instead of a huge bag of them. This will keep the temptation at bay to eat more and more sugar throughout the Easter holiday.

To cut down on refined sugar, consider providing homemade goodies instead of buying them at the grocery store. Many store-bought treats – like marshmallows, granola bars, cookies, and Rice Krispy treats – can also be made at home. When you make them yourself, you control the kinds of amounts of ingredients.

Although you may limit sugar, remember to help your kids monitor their intake as well as their activity after. “Even if your children eat a limited amount of candy, make sure they brush well immediately after eating them,” says Dr. Brett L. Johnson, DMD, a dentist in Oregon City, Oregon. “This will keep plaque from forming on the surfaces of teeth and causing tooth decay.”

The Reason for the Season

The items that fill an Easter basket don’t need to be entirely food-related. Although the focus of Easter commercially centers around bunnies, chicks and candy, the reason for celebrating this holiday has an important spiritual element for many of us. When it comes to celebrating Easter with children, balance the bunnies and chicks with Easter-themed items like books, bookmarks, stickers, erasers, and pencils that remind them of what this holiday is all about.

As a more meaningful exercise, fill eggs with symbols of the Easter season that are meaningful to you and your family. Once your children open the eggs, discuss their significance in your lives, creating memories that will last.

FFR Swiss Colony Giveaway! *CLOSED*

Congratulations to Leslie! You won this giveaway! Winner chosen by Random.org. Thanks to all who entered and to Swiss Colony for sponsoring this great giveaway!!!

Faith and Family Reviews received the following product in exchange for writing a review. While we consider it a privilege to receive free products to review, our reviews are our honest opinion and thoughts of the product.

Blame me for this giveaway being posted late. My daughter had it all ready and need me to write up the review, which I did not get to until today.

When you think of watermelon, don’t you think of summer time and picnics? Guess that is what made me choose a cake in the shape of watermelon to review from Swiss Colony.

What made this cake unique is the not only its shape but that it had mini chocolate chips throughout. I think that was my favorite part!

The outer layer of icing was a little hard, but the bottom almost tasted like white chocolate. It was layered in pink and white colored cake batter and was very rich. One piece is enough for most. There were only two of us that got two pieces, so it serves 10-12 people. Perfect party servings.

Overall the cake was not a favorite among our family, but thought it was a very cute cake. Half the family did not really like the cake but ate it. The other half liked the cake but not the frosting. My husband and oldest thought it was too sweet, but cute.

So the watermelon shaped cake gets a two thumbs up for being cute and you all have a chance to win it!

Enter to win a Watermelon Cake! Estimated value $29.95

St. Patrick’s Day!

I’m far from Irish, but like many other people I will be Irish for a day! I’ve got my corned beef & cabbage in the slow cooker. So, join in on the fun!

Who is St. Patrick?

http://familyfun.go.com/st-patricks-day/st-patricks-day-history-971546/
People all over the world celebrate on the 17th day of March in honor of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. Some cities have parades, most revelers wear green, and a few families commemorate the day with traditional Irish fare for their meal. However, everyone may not know who St. Patrick is.

Born in Britain during the 4th century, St. Patrick was kidnapped and enslaved by Irish raiders when he was a teenager. Although he was able to escape after six years and become a priest in Britain, he later chose to return to Ireland as a missionary, in order to help spread the teachings of Christianity to pagans. According to Irish folklore, he also used a shamrock to explain the Christian concept of Trinity to the Irish. In spite of continuous opposition from pagan leaders, he continued to evangelize for thirty years while baptizing newly converted Christians and establishing monasteries, churches, and schools. He died on March 17th and was canonized by the local church.

St. Patrick’s Day was first publicly celebrated in Boston in 1737 where a large population of Irish immigrants resided. Nearly 200 years later, the first St. Patrick’s Dayparade in the Irish Free State was held in Dublin in 1931. During the mid 90’s, the Irish government also began a campaign to promote tourism in Ireland on March 17th.

While many Catholics still quietly celebrate this day of religious observance by going to mass, St. Patrick’s Day slowly evolved to become a celebration of Irish heritage. Through the years, along with legendary shamrocks, many symbols were included in festivities that are reflective of Ireland’s folklore, culture, and national identity (think leprechauns, ethnic cuisine, and wearing green).Other places that join in on this celebration include Japan, New Zealand, Argentina, and Canada, along with many cities across the United States.

Here’s a fun family dessert for everyone to help out with also from Family Fun Magazine! I’ve made them, and they are really cute! http://familyfun.go.com/st-patricks-day/st-patricks-day-recipes/st-patricks-day-desserts/clover-cupcakes-687369/

Clover Cupcakes

From FamilyFun Magazine

Clover Cupcakes

It doesn’t take the luck of the Irish to make these St. Patty’s Day treats look so sweet — just a clever baking technique.

Ingredients
 • Cupcake batter
 • Cupcake tins and liners
 • Aluminum foil
 • White frosting
 • Green food coloring
 • Toothpick
 • Green licorice (we used Twizzlers Rainbow Twists sold in a pack with other colors)

Instructions
 1. Place paper liners in 32 standard muffin cups, then fill each halfway with the batter.
 2. Clover Cupcakes - Step 2 For each cupcake, roll three balls of foil (ours were 2/3 inch in diameter) and insert them evenly around the perimeter between the liner and the tin, as shown.
 3. Bake the cupcakes for a few minutes less than the package suggests (because there’s less batter per cup than usual), or until a toothpick comes out clean.
 4. Allow the cupcakes to cool, then remove them from the tin.
 5. Cover each with green frosting (our ratio was 1 teaspoon of green food coloring to one 16-ounce can of white frosting).
 6. Use a toothpick to draw leaf veins, and insert a 2-inch-long piece of green licorice for a stem.

How to Peel a Boiled Potato Without a Peeler or Knife!

I got this video in an email this morning and was very skeptical. Thinking to myself, there’s no way you can peel a boiled potato without a peeler or knife. Then I watched it.

YouTube – Dawn Wells Potato Peeling Video

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7375897927147969009#

How cool is that! I’m trying this the next time I make potato salad. It’s a great tip! If you’ve done this, does it really work? I wonder if she did that on Gilligan’s Island?

Chicken, Mozzarella & Basic Panini

Once, I was able to get my daughter down to sleep. I was flipping the pages of my new March 2011 Parents Magazine. When on page 115, I found this recipe. It immediately got my taste buds flowing! Check this out….
http://www.parents.com/recipe/chicken/chicken-mozzarella-and-basil-panini/

I made my own alterations to the recipe as I usually do. Instead of using basil leaves, I made basil pesto. I just spread a thin layer on the bread like mayo.

Here’s how I make my basil pesto.
2 1/2 to 3 cups of fresh basil
2 cloves of garlic
1/2 cup of olive oil
pinch of salt
1/2 cup of Parmesan cheese

Combine all in a food processor and mix until well blended.

This is a lot for sandwiches, but you can freeze leftover and put over pasta for another night! We will be making this again for sure!

See Brande’s bio on our writers page.

Funky Monkey Fruit Snacks

Funky Monkey Snacks are truly funky fruit snacks that are all natural and just fruit. Freeze dried fruit to be exact. Our family enjoyed these snacks. Each of these snacks had their own unique taste. I think I can honestly say that I do not think we have tasted anything quite like them. In a good, funky way. There is no other way to describe it. Here are the flavors for you to decide for yourself:

Purple Funk (banana with acai)

Applemon (apple with cinnamon)

MangOJ (mango with orange juice)

Pink Pineapple (pineapple with guava)

Bananamon (banana with cinnamon)

Jivealime (pineapple with lime)
Carnaval Mix (pineapple, banana, apple, papaya)

Pretty clever, huh?

The only thing is these packages only contain .42 ounces of fruit. Not very much and not very filling when you have a crew of growing little people. But these would definitely serve as a traveling treat, since we like to get convenient little snacks like these for our road trips. It is something new and fun.

Funky Monkey Snacks are 100% fruit, 95% organic, all natural, raw food and gluten free, GMO free, peanut/tree nut free and Kosher. No preservatives, Mom! Gotta love that.

The .42 oz bags are sold in a box of 12 for $15.48. 1 oz bags are sold in a box of 12 for about $30.00

Nature Crops Bars

Faith and Family Reviews received the following product in exchange for writing a review. While we consider it a privilege to receive free products to review, our reviews are our honest opinion and thoughts of the product.

I was sent all three bars by NatureCrops . I was really excited to try these bars as they are all natural, contain no high-fructose corn syrup, and are made with organic quinoa. And are gluten free.

We got to try the Quinoa and Almond, Quinoa and Prunes, and Quinoa and Strawberry bars.

Nearly all of our family loves quinoa, which we usually eat in a soup. I know, I know, quinoa in soup is very different than in a bar. I am just saying that to share that we have actually tasted quinoa and trying these bars is not our first exposure to it. Nevertheless, we were disappointed in the Quinoa and Almond bar. I thought it tasted rather stale and I did not care very much for it. I found all three bars rather dry. For some reason (perhaps because of our soup), I expected them to be more moist than dry. The Quinoa and Prunes, and Quinoa and Strawberry bars tasted alot better then the Quinoa and Almond bar, but overall I did not like the taste of Nature Crops bars as well as other bars I have tried. I wish I could say I did, but sorry I cannot. :( Everyone’s taste buds are different though.

We divided these bars up into little pieces so that everyone could try them and the younger children did not seem to mind them at all and asked for more. While my oldest did not care for them. The next two say they liked the prune one best, then the strawberry and then the almond. Just proves what I said, everyone’s taste buds are very different!

Our Review

Towel, Glass Water Bottle and Jump Rope.

The handles are padded and sturdy.

The inside lining of the bag is cloth except for the bottom and the lining of the pockets, which are plastic. From experience, the plastic tends to rip after extended use. We know because other bags have done this and the lining in this bag is the same material.

The bag has two side pockets. One is deep enough to hold a smaller ball, the other is a normal side pocket. There is even a small pocket on the outside of the bag, which could be used for a key to a hotel room or something less important since there is snap or velcro closure. It is just an open pocket.

We received a Yoplait Original yogurt gift pack that includes a *VIP Coupon for a free sample of Yoplait Original yogurt, as well as a duffel bag, speed rope, water bottle and sport towel. We will be giving away an additional prize pack to offer as a giveaway to one of YOU!

The yogurt is very tasty and comes in a lot of delicious flavors (watch the sugar content though!) We tried the strawberry and banana flavor and it was very good. We could taste both fruits and it was very palatable. I try very hard to get my calcium not only through my bebe-O vitamins (contains 250 mg or 25% of DRV), but also through milk, cheese and yogurt, as well as greens.

The duffle bag is a nice sports bag that is roomy. Perfect for those heading to the gym. The duffle bag is about 20″ in length, 12″ wide, and about 10″ high appx. The speed rope is fun to use and provides a way for the children to burn of excess energy! The water bottle is glass and is very tall.
