Review ~ FiberChoice Chewable Fiber Supplement

Faith and Family Reviews received the following product in exchange for writing a review. While we consider it a privilege to receive free products to review, our reviews are our honest opinion and thoughts of the product.

FiberChoice chewable tablets and fiber supplements.

FiberChoice Chewable Fiber supplement is a simple, convenient, natural fiber that provides the regular benefits of fiber, while also helping to support the immune system, digestive tract, and overall health.

The main ingredient in FiberChoice is inulin, the same healthy fiber found naturally in many fruits and vegetables. Inulin is  “prebiotic,” which means it nourished the friendly, “good” bacteria in the digestive system.

FiberChoice is available in four formulas: FiberChoice original formula, FiberChoice Weight Management, Fiber Choice Plus Calcium, and Fiber Choice Plus Antioxidants.

Fiber Choice products are available at your local food, drug and discount stores. For more information and to check out the product visit www.fiberchoice.com

OUR REVIEW:

The product we received was FiberChoice original formula. My normal fiber supplement is taken in the form of a “gummi” so I was a bit hesitant to try a chewable tablet, for fear that it might taste chalky. This supplement is NOT chalky is it nice and smooth, it chews nicely and goes down well! I like the fact that no additional water is necessary when taking this supplement…just chew and go! I must say that the flavors are good…nothing yucky or odd tasting, just fruity flavors! The product I received was also sugar free…so an added plus ! I have added this to my morning supplement routine and I must say I am very pleased. The only downfall of the product is that it may cause your urine to smell. The supplement caused a smell similar to that of eating asparagus…I was not put off by the smell enough to stop the supplements, just something that happened as a side effect.

All in all, this was a great product. I liked the overall digestive health I have felt while using the product, plus the benefits of the added fiber. I may just switch my gummi fiber supplement out for Fiber Choice!

Veggie Patch Review

Faith and Family Reviews received the following product in exchange for writing a review. While we consider it a privilege to receive free products to review, our reviews are our honest opinion and thoughts of the product.

Company Information

“VEGGIE PATCH, the brand name for FoodTech International’s products, is making a big impact in the rapidly growing soy foods industry. In fact, since it was founded in 1995, Veggie Patch has become a $15 million business and is the fastest growing company in the $300 million meat alternatives retail category.

Featured prominently in produce aisles at leading supermarkets throughout the country, Veggie Patch is well positioned to appeal to this consumer segment: American families wishing to make more healthful food choices. Veggie Patch’s recipe for success is a simple one. We offer America’s favorite foods in familiar and attractive new packaging, with fresh ingredients and delicious taste, making meatless foods “user-friendly.”

An added bonus of the Veggie Patch line is its appeal to children. Kids don’t find vegetables to be intimidating when they look and taste like chicken nuggets! This means parents can feel relieved to know their children are getting the nutrition they need, without the extra fat, calories, chemicals and other modern-day concerns posed by meat— it’s “meat” you can feel good about!”

Product Veggie Patch Offers

Spinach Nuggets, Chick’n Nuggets, Meatless Buffalo Wings, Chick’n Cutlets,, Broccoli Bites, Spinach Bites with Cheese

In addition, they have Simply The Best Veggie Dogs.  And 3 varieties of Meatless Sausage, including Jalapeno Cheddar, Spiced Apple, and Sun Dried Tomato with Artichoke.

My Review

First off, I’d like to thank the Veggie Patch team for all their help. For the past few weeks, I had a hard time trying to find Veggie Patch items.  Of course, it was my fault.  I was looking in frozen food and the Veggie Patch products are located by the tofu’s and veggies.

When I visited the Veggie Patch website (http://www.facebook.com/eatveggiepatch.com) today, I noticed my grocery store only seemed carry about 4 of the 19 products.  I will be suggesting they add more Veggie Patch products.

My family and I received the Falafel Chickpea Balls & Spinach Bites with Cheese.  One word.  YUMMY!  I wish my grocery store offered more of the varieties that Veggie Patch offers.

The Spinach Bites with Cheese are wonderful!  Our next gathering we are getting them again!  Even with the breading they are not “heavy” on the belly.

My husband LOVES chickpeas and the Falafel Chickpea Balls did not disappoint.  There is a recipe on the inside of the packaging that is not to be missed, Falafel Pockets.  Try them for yourself.

Veggie Patch has a few more new fans!  I’ll be speaking with my local grocery store to ask them for more varieties!

Part 2 of 2 of the Lemon, Thyme and Peppermint Series

This is the second part of a two part series, the first part was shared last week here. This series contains infomation from Dr. Jean Valnet, MD, the well-known French medical researcher and essential oil expert, which appeared in BIOTECH News. Debra Raybern’s comments are preceded by the initials DR.

Oregano and Other Super Oils

In his book, The Practice of Aromatherapy, Jean Valnet describes how oil of oregano is potent enough to sterilize sewage water! In 1995 Greek researchers at the University of Thessaloniki discovered that a 1/4000 dilution of fresh wild oil of oregano sterilized septic water.

Even in very watered down concentrations oil of oregano has been found to be “extremely bactericidal” in its action against 8 strains of bacteria including E coli, Salmonella and Staphylococcus. At Cornell University research has shown it was effective against 30 different germs.

A University of Tennessee study found oil of oregano to be useful against 9 different harmful food borne microbes. In Holland scientists found that carvacrol, one of oregano’s components, did an excellent job in inhibiting food borne Bacillus bacteria.

DR NANCY SNYDERMAN (VO) Noble was experimenting with bacteria called Staphylococcus aureus. Staph is a very common bacterium that lives on our skin and generally causes no trouble. But if it gets into the bloodstream, say through a cut or surgery, staph can very quickly damage the heart, lungs, brain, or poison the entire system. Staph is also very easily spread by touch. It’s found on doors, handrails, counter tops, you name it. What made Noble’s strain of staph so extraordinary, so frightening, was that it was resistant to the most potent antibiotic in existence, a drug called vancomycin.

“Oil pressed from oregano leaves that contain the active ingredient carvacrol may be an effective treatment against sometimes drug-resistant bacterial infection. Georgetown University researchers have found that oil of oregano appears to reduce infection “as effectively as traditional antibiotics.” Oil of oregano at relatively low doses was found to be efficacious against Staphylococcus bacteria and was comparable in its germ-killing properties to antibiotic drugs such as streptomycin, penicillin and vancomycin.” [Science Daily 10/11/2001]

The findings were presented by Harry G. Preuss, MD, professor of physicology and biophysics, Georgetown University, at the American College of Nutrition’s annual meeting in Orlando, Florida.

Super charged essential oils:

1. Oil from thyme: Destroys the anthrax bacillus, the typhoid bacillus, the glanders bacillus, staphylococcus, the diptheria bacillus, meningococcus, and Koch’s.
2. Essence of Lemon: Neutralize the meningococcus, typhus bacillus, pneumococcus, staphylococcus aureus and hemolytic streptococcus. Neutralizes the typhus bacillus, staphylococcus and the diphtheric bacillus
3. BLEND: pine, thyme, peppermint, lavender, rosemary, cloves, cinnamon: Antieptic effect of a blend of essential oils—including pine, thyme, peppermint, lavender, rosemary, cloves and cinnamon was studied in order to test the ability of the oils to purify the air of harmful disease-causing bacteria, and many forms of bacteria —INCLUDING Staphylococcus aureus.
4. Peppermint: Improve mental acuity and alertness, vanquish fatigue, soothe the respiratory system, relieve nausea, fever and vomiting, and quickly put a stop to acid indigestion and heartburn. It kills intestinal parasites, staphylococcus and tuberculosis bacillus. Inhalant for the treatment of asthma, bronchitis, and sinusitis.
5. BLEND: Eucalyptus, clove, lemon cinnamon rosemary: dramatically inhibit the growth of many forms of bacteria—INCLUDING Staphylococcus aureus.
6. Oil of oregano: Potent enough to sterilize sewage water! It is “extremely bactericidal” against 8 strains of bacteria including E Coil, Salmonella and Staphylococcus. Reduces infection “as effectively as traditional antibiotics and exhibited the greatest antibacterial action against common pathogenic germs such as Staph, E. Coil and Listeria.

Kid’s and Healthy Eating

Although our family is in process, we really do try to eat plenty of fruits and veggies. Our problem is keeping those growing tummies full! Our boys are always coming to me saying, “I’m hungry!” So we do provide them with lots of carbs too because they are very slim and do not seem to have an issue with weight control at all! Just like their daddy, they will be tall and thin.

If you want to help your child eat more balanced, healthier meals….then here is something that might be a tool to get them motivated to eat those veggies. It’s a children’s plate that is sectioned to promote the recommendation of half their meal fruits and vegetables!  This plate is perfect for a  5 year old (maybe even the 10 year old.. since the creator’s 10 year old still eats on it!  Not sure my children over 5 would since they associate it with a “baby plate”) Parents, grandparents, health departments, hospitals, and children’s diabetes programs have all purchased plates and found them to be helpful at home and in their practice.

We received one, but I have to be honest we have not used it yet! I have had it in my review pile on the desk and was saving it for baby to use. It is a typical child’s plate and will wash up well. However, it is melamine ware, which is BPA free, lead free and perfectly safe to use in the dishwasher. It is not microwavable though.

This plate is brightly colored and attracts the attention of small children with its fun design. Love the little strawberry, don’t you? Sturdy little plate.

For more information or to buy this great kid’s plate, please visit www.superhealthykids.com or www.healthykidsplate.com

Lemon, Thyme and Peppermint: Part 1 of 2

This is a two part series with infomation from Dr. Jean Valnet, MD, the well-known French medical researcher and essential oil expert, which appeared in BIOTECH News. Debra Raybern’s comments are preceded by the initials DR:

Dr. Jean Valnet, MD, the well-known French medical researcher and essential oil expert, points out that the essential oil from thyme literally destroys the anthrax bacillus, the typhoid bacillus, the glanders bacillus, staphylococcus, the diphtheria bacillus, meningococcus, and Koch’s bacillus, which is the bacteria responsible for tuberculous lesions!

DR: The oil blend Longevity and the Longevity capsules both contain thyme oil. Thyme oil itself is 15 cents per drop. Thyme oil was also tested and found to be protective of the fats in the brain from turning rancid, which researchers believe is a contributor to Alzheimer’s and senile dementia.

BIOTECH: He further points out, “The essence of lemon is second to none in its antiseptic and bactericidal properties. The works of Morel and Rochaix have demonstrated that the vapors of lemon essence alone will neutralize the meningococcus in 15 minutes, the typhus bacillus in less than an hour, pneumococcus in one to three hours, staphylococcus aureus in two hours and hemolytic streptococcus in three to twelve hours. Applied directly, the essential oil itself neutralizes the typhus bacillus and staphylococcus in only five minutes and the diphtheric bacillus in just 20 minutes.”

DR: Are you drinking a few drops of lemon in your water daily? A most inexpensive way to protect yourself and family. At six cents per drop, you can’t get better protection.

BIOTECH: In tests conducted in France by Professor Griffon, Director of the French Police Toxicology Laboratory, the antiseptic effect of a blend of essential oils—including pine, thyme, peppermint, lavender, rosemary, cloves and cinnamon—was studied in order to test the ability of the oils to purify the air of harmful disease-causing bacteria. First, Professor Griffon set up a number of Petri dishes approximately 15cm from ground level in an open room, allowing them to stand for 24 hours, the germs from the air being collected naturally as they settled into the open Petri dishes. After 24 hours he analyzed the dishes, finding them to contain 210 colonies of various microbes, including numerous molds and staphylococci. He then sprayed the mixture of essential oils in the form of an aerosol into the air in the room. After only 15 minutes, only 14 colonies of microorganisms out of the original 210 were left alive. After 30 minutes, only FOUR colonies of the original 210 were left. Importantly, ALL of the potentially harmful disease-causing molds and staphylococci had been killed within the first 30 minutes, 3)

DR: Rosemary, clove and cinnamon are all ingredients in the Thieves oil and line of products. I hope you are using these daily for personal care and household cleaning.

BIOTECH: Peppermint–Known to dramatically and rapidly improve mental acuity and alertness, vanquish fatigue, soothe the respiratory system, relieve nausea, fever and vomiting, and quickly put a stop to acid indigestion and heartburn. It also kills intestinal parasites, as well as staphylococcus, the tuberculosis bacillus, and numerous other pathogenic microorganisms. When diffused, it purifies the air and water. Peppermint is also often used as an inhalant for the treatment of asthma, bronchitis, and sinusitis, and is known for its pain relieving properties.

DR: The medical community may be at a loss when it comes to fighting some of our most potent germs, but God isn’t. He gave us essential oils. In their purest, non-adulterated, properly distilled, expertly harvested, natural and most potent form (this rules out all but Young Living), we can have the protection from these germs and be able to fight them off in most cases.

In 1996 Weber State University Annual Research Report, they cite 19 oils which displayed a 100% kill rate against T7 phage, and three oils which displayed a 100% kill rate against Staphylococcus aureus phage. The Thieves oil blend was also test and shown to have a 99.96% kill rate for airborne bacteria. Dr. Close, environmental scientist specializing in mold remediation, proved that the Thieves Oil Blend killed mold, including the black mold when diffused.

In a world filled with so much disease, it is this kind of information that should make Young Living essential oils a matter of FIRST IMPORTANCE to you and your family. They could literally save your life one day.

FoodDay.org

We are excited to present a major new campaign that we are launching today with some of the most prominent voices for change in the food policy world.  Organized by the Center for Science in the Public Interest, Food Day will encourage people around the country to sponsor or participate in activities that encourage Americans to “eat real” and support healthy, affordable food grown in a sustainable, humane way.

We’ve modeled Food Day on Earth Day.  It is led by honorary co-chairs Tom Harkin (D-IA) and Rep. Rosa Delauro (D-CT), and is backed by an impressive advisory board including author Michael Pollan, physicians David Satcher and Michael Roizen, professors Walter Willett, Kelly Brownell, and Marion Nestle, and prominent chefs such as Alice Waters, Dan Barber, and Nora Pouillon.  Food Day also has the support of a wide range of national and local organizations focused on hunger, sustainable agriculture, animal welfare, and public health.

We envision thousands of events on October 24, 2011, from coast to coast, ranging from small events in homes and classrooms, to large rallies in public parks, and hearings in city councils and state legislatures.  A Food Day event could be as simple as a vegetable-recognition contest in a kindergarten, a potluck dinner with friends featuring locally sourced ingredients, a spirited debate on a college campus, or celebrating the harvest from an urban garden.

Food Day is all about solving local communities’ food problems.  Nationally, we’ve identified five key priorities:

– Reducing diet-related disease by promoting healthy foods

– Supporting sustainable farms and cutting subsidies to agribusiness

– Expanding access to food and alleviating hunger

– Reforming factory farms to protect animals and the environment

– Curbing junk-food marketing to kids
Can we count on you to participate in a Food Day event near you, or better yet, will you organize a Food Day event in your community?  If none of the topics above appeals to you, is there another food issue confronting your community that needs attention?  A growing network of partner organizations, advisors, and Food Day organizing staff will help putting a Food Day event on the calendar.  (In weeks we’ll have a web-based map that lets you schedule or RSVP to Food Day events with just a few clicks of a mouse).

Please email us at foodday@cspinet.org, or call us at 202-777-8392.  Food Day is just a little more than six months out.  That’s more than enough time to plan, and let’s get started together!

You can keep up with Food Day and other exciting things by ‘liking’ Food Day on Facebook, or following us at our Twitter handle (#foodday).

Yoga by the Dozen DVD Review & Giveaway

Key Benefits:

  • Increase Cognitive & Motor skills
  • Confidence, Courage and Self-Esteem
  • Balance & Coordination
  • Memory Retention and Concentration
  • Nurture Creativity and Self Expression

About JoAnna Ross:  “Founder of Yoga By The Dozen™ was trained at City Yoga in Anusara teach-training program.  A life long performer, having danced on Broadway for years, found her natural charisma as a performer instantly clicked with kids.”

My Review:  I discovered a few things about myself when reviewing “Yoga by the Dozen”.  I need A LOT of practice, I have little balance and no flexibility.

My daughter (2 years old) and I put on “Yoga by the Dozen”, she loved it!  Watching the children on the DVD (who are little older than her) bend and stretch their bodies into poses.  She was following along (she’s needs to work on her balance too, must be a family trait) and trying to say the different poses on the DVD.  She’s a big fan of the Virabhadrasana #3 (Warrior #3 Pose).   The DVD is approximately 30 minutes.  JoAnna demonstrates the pose first and then one of the children replicates the pose to refresh the other children.  Then the whole class does the pose together.  I enjoyed watching the kids, they are all really enjoying themselves in the DVD.  We are going to continue practicing our yoga!

This is a wonderful DVD for beginning adults and children of all ages.  On the “Yoga by the Dozen” website www.yogabythedozen.com, you can also visit their store, they have yoga mats and yoga t-Shirts for kids and adults; and don’t forget your video for only 17.99 (plus s&h).

Horizon Organic Milk

Faith and Family Reviews received the following product in exchange for writing a review. While we consider it a privilege to receive free products to review, our reviews are our honest opinion and thoughts of the product.

Most of our family loves milk. Milk is a good source of Vitamin D and Calcium. It is good for us or at least we are taught that it is. We tend to buy milk that is on sale. We do try to avoid brands that contain hormones etc. Personally, I grew up on raw milk due to living in the country. I have fond memories of going to the farm with my mom to get milk out of the huge milk tank in the milk parlor in the milking barn. I would visit with the farmers, look in on the milking, visit the calves or just wait in the car. We knew our farmer. I won’t get into the raw vs. pasteurized milk debate here in this post, but if you are itching for a debate we can do that in the comment section. ;-) We could even debate the pasteurized vs. organic issue as well.

Speaking of organic, last month we received three coupons for a half gallon of Horizon® Organic Milk. Most of you probably already know that organic milk is produced without antibiotics, pesticides and from cows not given added growth hormones. Organic milk is also produced using cows who are treated humanly and who are grass fed or fed organic feed or hay (No GMOs!) during the winter. Much different than feedlot raised cattle. Horizon® Organic Milk is available in gallons and half gallons. What I did not know is that Horizon® is ultrapasteurized. Not sure that is a good thing, unfortunately. Nevertheless, purchasing milk from Horizon® supports over 600 individual organic farmers! Wow, I did not know that fact.

Our Review

We enjoyed Horizon® Organic Reduced Fat Milk very much. It had good flavor and tasted like milk. We drank it up in quick order. It came nicely packaged and we appreciated the coupons that bought us 1.5 gallons of milk. What more can we say? Milk is milk? (Let the debate in the comment section begin! Seriously, I’d love to hear where you all are on this topic.)

Little Switches Make a Difference

Have you ever tried to change your habits or make a new year’s resolution but never seem to stick with it and accomplish what you set out to do? Little switches seem to be what makes new habits stick, rather than huge changes. Slow and steady wins the race, right? It is the little changes that make a difference in the long run.

Little Switches to Healthier Eating

Take the way we eat. Years ago we were a split family when it came to eating, but once children came along we wanted to model good eating habits (for the record we are still working on modeling good eating habits, as we are a work in progress!). When I wanted to switch us over from white bread to wheat bread, I made our bread with half wheat flour and half unbleached flour. Yes, that was back when I was actually making our bread. Then I slowly increased the wheat until we were eating all whole wheat.

I did the same thing for refined white sugar. Although organic cane sugar, sucanat, or honey can pretty much be switched evenly with very little noticeable difference. The honey being a liquid is a bit trickier, but sugar can be decreased in most recipes by about half.

We have also switched from using so much butter to using half applesauce (unsweetened). This is one we have not stuck with very well, but it is a great way to cut down on the fat content in favorite baked goods.

Organic vs Non-Organic

Organic food is expensive, but we try as much as possible to buy organic. Making this switch has been the biggest challenge to our pocket book, but we feel it is an important one for our health and to support the local growers – considering that 98% of our food is bought outside of the state of Illinois!

Buy Local

Buying locally is an area we are currently working on, rather than always giving the “big” guys our money. It is our desire to support the “little” local businesses that are usually family owned and literally dying for business.

This might mean going to the little mom and pop copy store rather than Staples, Office Max or Office Depot. Or it could mean going to the quaint cafe or family restaurant in town rather than a fast food chain. Or simply going to the family owned grocery store rather than a major chain – I know, they are a dying breed.

It is difficult to stick to buying local because it often costs more money to support these businesses than it does to go to the major chain stores. Nevertheless, we are trying to make that switch over ever so slowly.

Little Switches in Daily Life

With spring upon us, one of our family’s goals has been to get up earlier. When our children were all little it was easy because they would be in bed by 7 or 8 o’clock at night and up at 6 o’clock in the morning. Switching from staying up late to going to bed early has been hard but I think it is important for us so we can get up earlier in the morning. I love the long days of summer and want to make the most of them and get a walk in before the heat of the day!

To be successful in any sort of change, I like deciding what is important to us and then moving forward with little switches at a time, making a difference for the long haul.

What Everybody Ought To Know

Editor’s Note: This is a guest post. While we appreciate our guest writer’s submissions, this does not constitute endorsement or agreement to the opinions expressed in the articles featured.

What Everybody Ought To Know About How To How To Lower Cholesterol Without Medication To Protect Themselves Against Heart Disease

by Mary Margaret

There is no denying the fact that heart disease is one of the top two killer diseases in the world today. Given high cholesterol is a risk factor for this disease, learning how to lower cholesterol without medication is an excellent way to protect your heart health while giving you some peace of mind.

There are 2 types of cholesterol that warrant attention – LDL (low density lipoprotein) and HDL (high density lipoprotein), and both play an important role in the body.

The fact is, your body needs cholesterol to survive. Your liver produces around 80% of your body’s cholesterol, with the remaining amount coming from the foods you eat.

What Does Cholesterol Actually Do?

The key tasks performed by cholesterol within the body are as follows:

* building and maintaining cell membranes

* essential hormone production (including testosterone and estrogen)

* Vitamin D production

It is so important to maintain the correct balance of cholesterol within your body to ensure these essential functions are carried out successfully. Learning and implementing how to lower cholesterol without medication is one of the best ways to achieve this.

LDL cholesterol is commonly referred to as the bad cholesterol and the reason for this is because when your LDL cholesterol levels become too high, it will trigger the formation of plaque within the walls and linings of your arteries.

As the level of plaque accumulates over time, clots and blockages in your arteries can begin to appear. If any of the main arteries that supply oxygenated blood and nutrients to your heart or brain become affected, then you run the risk of having a heart attack or a stroke.

HDL cholesterol is different and is commonly known as the good cholesterol because it works by removing excess amounts of LDL cholesterol from your bloodstream, thus slowing down the production of plaque.

The key to ensuring maximum protection against heart disease is to keep your LDL and HDL cholesterol within the recommended levels.

Why You Should Lower Cholesterol Naturally

Lowering cholesterol naturally is the safest way to achieve optimal cholesterol levels. Prescription medications, called statins, while extremely effective at lowering LDL cholesterol, have little to no impact on HDL levels and are fraught with serious side effects. These include memory loss, cognitive impairment, muscle pain and weakness, kidney and liver damage and possible heart failure.

When you lower cholesterol naturally, you avoid those side effects and you manage the whole of cholesterol – LDL and HDL.

How To Lower Cholesterol Without Medication

There are a number of steps you can take to lower cholesterol without medication and they include making some lifestyle changes as follows:

Change What You Eat

Modify your diet to reduce the amount of saturated fat, trans fat and cholesterol you consume each day. Switch to foods that are high in soluble fibre and Omega 3 as these have the ability to lower LDL while increasing HDL. Such foods include whole grains, fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, tuna, sardine, herring), nuts, seeds, olive oil, fruits and vegetables.

Get Moving

You need to get regular exercise in as often as you can and you should focus on any exercise that will raise your heart rate and keep it raised for a minimum of thirty minutes. This will boost your HDL cholesterol levels while lowering LDL. Recommended exercises include walking, cycling, dancing, and swimming. But the goal should be to choose something you know you will enjoy or can do with a friend or family member, as you will then have a much better chance of sustaining it.

Stop Smoking Or Drinking Alcohol

Not an easy task and if you do not think you can quit completely, then seriously consider reducing the amount you smoke or drink. Smoking and drinking adversely affect your cholesterol levels as well putting you at risk of developing other serious health problems.

While the above changes might seem small, do not underestimate their potential value to your heart health. You can also strengthen your efforts with natural supplements such as fish oil (if you don’t like eating fish itself), or a quality natural cholesterol supplement. But always ensure that any supplement you use has purely natural ingredients, properly sourced, that know how to lower cholesterol without medication or risky  side effects.
